Scam warning

We have recently learned that a few members have received emails which are scams. We are not sure of the extent of the problem, so are asking you to be on your guard.

If you receive an email which says it is from a fellow U3A member, and which asks you to purchase a gift card for them or send them money, please ignore the email and delete it. It is a scam.

Please do not purchase a gift card or send money. Do not open any links or attachments in the email. Delete it immediately.

Here is an example of one email. The address that has been used is a genuine member’s address.

The following text is an example of the second email from the scammer, received after a reply had been sent to the first email.

‘It’s my niece birthday and I need to get her Apple gift card, but I can’t do this now because I’m currently traveling out of town. I’ve tried purchasing online, unfortunately no luck with that. Could you get it from any store around you? I’ll refund as soon as I get back
Please let me know if you can handle this .
